The Green Tree 1727

Tucked away in the picturesque Tudhoe Village of Spennymoor, The Green Tree 1727 isn’t just a restaurant - it’s a time capsule of charm, flavour, and warmth. From the moment you step into the ivy-covered exterior at 41 Tudhoe Village, the sense of heritage is palpable. This women-owned gem has been serving locals and travellers since, yes, you guessed it - 1727 - and yet, it continues to feel alive and current with every meal served and every song played during its cozy live music evenings.

What really stands out about The Green Tree 1727 is how effortlessly it marries rustic British comfort food with a flair for the contemporary. Think of it as your traditional countryside inn reimagined with a menu that pulls no punches. Regulars rave about the Corned Beef Pie, hearty and nostalgic with a golden crust that crumbles just right. Then there’s the Green Curry, which sneaks in a subtle Southeast Asian surprise among the otherwise English classics - a refreshing curveball that’s rich, spicy, and perfectly balanced.

If you're the kind of diner who can’t resist a well-done roast, the Giant Yorkshire Pudding with Roast Beef and Vegetables is not to be missed. It’s exactly the kind of dish you’d expect in a place where Sunday lunch isn’t just a meal - it’s an event. Add a side of Cauliflower Cheese and maybe even a generous pour of Cider or a chilled Beer, and you’ve got yourself a lazy afternoon well spent.

Of course, The Green Tree 1727 isn't just about savoury indulgence. Dessert here is treated with just as much respect. The Chocolate Fudge Cake is the kind that clings to your fork with just the right density, and the Caramel Apple Pie delivers that cozy, cinnamon-laced warmth that transports you straight to grandma’s kitchen. And for the nostalgic sweet tooths? A tall, colourful Knicker Bocker Glory layered with jelly, cream, and ice cream hits all the right retro notes.

Beyond the food, the restaurant’s ambiance plays a starring role. With a crackling fireplace, an impressive tea and wine selection, and great coffee to round out your meal, the vibe is effortlessly homely. Whether you’re grabbing a quick solo lunch or settling in for a long dinner with friends, the setting invites you to slow down. Plus, with outdoor seating available on sunnier days and a wheelchair-accessible entrance and car park, it’s a space that genuinely feels welcoming to all.

There’s a touch of theatre, too. Live music nights bring extra warmth to the space - nothing overbearing, just smooth melodies that pair well with a forkful of Lamb Shank or a sip of red wine. And while the vibe is relaxed and rustic, there’s a clear sense of pride in service. The team here - passionate and personable - are more than happy to help you navigate the diverse menu, whether you're curious about the Spicy Parmesan Chicken or in the mood for something lighter like the Salmon Fillet served with stir-fried vegetables, noodles, and sweet chilli sauce.

For locals, The Green Tree 1727 is the kind of place you can drop into on a whim - just as suited to a casual pint as it is to a celebratory meal. And for visitors, it’s a destination in its own right. A spot that feels like it has stories in its walls, generations of tradition in its recipes, and a heartbeat that never quite slows down.

From old-school puddings to modern curry twists, classic pub drinks to ambient live music, The Green Tree 1727 offers a dining experience that’s as comforting as it is quietly surprising.

Came for Sunday Lunch which was exceptional! Definitely recommend the pigs in blankets and cauliflower cheese as extra add ons. For a main I had the nut roast which is a great alternative to the traditional Sunday lunch meats. The pub is dog friendly in one section and there is a lovely beer garden too. It's worth noting that the pub isn't 100% wheelchair accessible as there is a step at the entrance and to the washroom

Met an old friend here for a pint, sat outside as was a half decent day, spoke to the landlady of the pub and she was friendly and easy to talk to, atmosphere was really nice. It's dog friendly too which is a massive bonus for me

We had an amazing meal at The Green Tree last evening. Although the pub was very busy, we were still served promptly, efficiently and politely by the staff. We enjoyed fabulous food - my husband had a huge plate of fish and chips while I had the Singapore noodles with Quorn. Delicious! This historic pub has a lovely vibe and a calm and homely atmosphere. Well done to all the staff and management. We'll be back! Ellie and Stu
